About

Jasper Simons at Frieze NYC 2026

Born in 1974 (Apeldoorn, The Netherlands), Jasper Simons is a contemporary artist working at the intersection of painting and sculpture. Through cuts, scars, apertures, and layered surfaces, his work explores friction, and the enduring tension between the desire for autonomy and the need for connection.

Working primarily in wood, graphite, acrylic, and charcoal, he employs both additive and subtractive processes, carving, cutting, and excavating surfaces as a form of mark-making. These physical interventions transform the picture plane into a site of encounter, resistance, and exchange.

His process-driven abstractions investigate attachment, constraint, and the forces that shape human relationships and identity. Informed by minimalism and postwar abstraction, his work uses restrained geometric forms and material contrasts to create spaces for contemplation, inviting viewers to engage with the dynamic tensions between vulnerability and strength, intimacy and autonomy, connection and distance.

Jasper Simons resides and works in Reston, VA, United States
